Girls Varsity Bowling · Girls Advance to Elite Eight in State Finals

Lapeer High School 8th 3013

After qualifying third at regionals last week, the varsity girls advanced to the State Finals on March 6th at Thunderbowl in Allen Park. The qualifying round consisted of 8 Baker games and two five-player matches, with only the top eight teams (total pin count) advancing to the arena for match play. The girls got off to a great start, score a 200 and a 182 in their first Baker set. After a less-than-stellar 6th Baker game, the girls found themselves dropping in the standings, but bounced right back with a 197. Following two strong team games, they just had to wait to see if they were going to advance. After a few minutes of waiting, there was an announcement. Lapeer and Monroe were tied at 3013 pins for the final spot. A tie is broken by a Baker set roll off – winner take all. The girls wasted no time, and with the pressure on, and a whole bowling alley of fans watching only this one match, they rolled a 221 first game, to pretty much, put the tie breaker away, beating Monroe 427-316.

After a quick lunch break, the girls were matched against #1 seed, Lake Orion in the quarter finals. Lapeer got off to a good start with lead after the two Baker games, but couldn’t hold on against a very hot Lake Orion team. Lake Orion then advanced to the semi-finals.

Sophomore, Cynthia Slater also qualified for the individual state championship tournament on Saturday, and bowled well, but did not make the final cut.

All of these girls represented the school incredibly well all season. And, they had many great accomplishments along the way. Not the least of which was advancing further than any other Lapeer girls bowling team into the state finals, hopefully breaking the ice for many more teams in the near future.
